Adam and Eve.

 Who:

a.   Adam: (the meaning is uncertain but it pertains to the earth, literally the earth or red earth). It has been said that it simply means, "Mankind." (Genesis 2:7)

b.   Eve: Mother of all living (Genesis 3:20).

What:

a.   Adam and Eve were the first human beings created (Genesis 1:26).

b.   They were placed in a Utopian (perfect/paradise) garden designed by God to fill man's needs (Genesis 2:15)

c.    They were also the recipients of God's first law (Genesis 2:16-17).

Where:

a.   Genesis 1: 26-28: God's decision to make man.

b.  Genesis 2: 7-8:     A recounting of Adam's creation.

c.   Genesis 2: 18-23: The creation of Eve.

d.  Genesis 3:1-6:      Man transgresses God's law.

e.  Genesis 3:16-24: God removes man from the garden

f.    Genesis 5:1-5:      The genealogy of Adam

g.  Romans 5:12-14: Physical relating to sin (from Adam forward)

h.  1 Corinthian 15:45-49: We, like Adam, are corruptible but we can be on the

     incorruptible,
i.    1 Timothy 2:11-15: The order of creation was significant.

When:

a.   In the beginning (Genesis 1:1, 26)

b.   Sometime indefinite time between 12, 000 and 8,000 years B.C.

c.   Adam lived for 930 years (Genesis 5:5).

Why:

a.   Adam and Eve were the first.:

i.    To receive a law from God (Genesis 2:16-17).

ii.   To break a law from God. (Genesis 3:6)

iii.  To live with the consequences of sin (Genesis 3:15-19, 22-24).

  Cain and Abel

Who:

a.   Cain: (means, "to acquire" or "to form" like a blacksmith),

 b.   Abel (means son).

What:

a.   We know that these two were born to Adam and Eve.(Genesis 5:1-2).

b.   They were commanded to worship in a manner according to God's will, one

did and one did not (Genesis 4:3-7).

c.   Cain was the first murderer, taking the life of his own brother (Genesis 4:8)

Where:

a.  Genesis 4:1-2        They are born.

b.  Genesis 4:3-7        They offer sacrifices to God.

c.  Genesis 4:8-16      Cain kills his brother and is sent out.

d.  Luke 11:49-51:      Abel is counted as a martyr

e.  Hebrews 11:4        Abel's offering was by faith.

When:

a.   We are not told, how long after Adam's creation, that Cain and Abel were born to him.

b.   Adam's genealogy from Genesis 5 skips to Seth who was born when Adam was 130.

Why:

a.    We learn from them both that God sets standards which must be met

(Genesis 4:1-2; Heb. 11:4)

b.    We must do God's will in order to be accepted by God (Genesis 4:7).

c.   We can see the effects of jealousy by Cain's example of murder (Genesis 4:8).                                                         

 Noah

 Who:  

             a. Noah: The meaning of this name is unsure.

                        1. It has something to do with "rest" or "comfort" of bring relief."

                        2. Noah had a wife and three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth

were married. Their mates in all four cases remain unnamed.

 What: 

a.   Noah was one of only eight righteous among the population of the entire earth (Genesis 6:5-8).

b.   God choose to destroy all the earth except Noah and his family and selected animals (Genesis 6:13-21).

c.   Noah and his family were saved from the devastating world-wide flood.

 Where:

            a.   Genesis 6: 8         Noah is introduced as righteous.

b.   Genesis 6:13-22   Noah is instructed as to his family's safe delivery from the flood.

c.   Genesis 7:13-24   Noah and his family in the ark. The world is destroyed,

d.   Genesis 8-9:29     Noah and his family is delivered from the ark are instructed to.re-populate the earth.

e.   Luke 17:26-27      The rebellion of Noah's day compared to the last day.
f.    Heb. 11:7    The first great hero of the faith mention in this list,
g.   1 Peter 3:20         The type and antitype of the flood,
h.   2 Peter 2:4-9        Noah is one example of God's ability to deliver the righteous.

 When:

            a.   Only an estimate can be made. It is assumed that the flood occurred somewhere around 4,000 to 5,000 yrs .BC      

i. Noah was 600 years of age when the floods began (Genesis 7:11).

ii The waters prevailed for 150 days. Noah lived 350 more years after the flood (Genesis 9:28)

Why:

a.    One great reason:

i.    Genesis 6:22 "Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did."

a   Noah did what God asked of him.

b.   Out of all the world Noah was chosen for his righteousness (Genesis 6:8).

Abraham and Sarah:

Who:

a.   These two were first know as Abram and Sarai (Genesis 17:1-8, 17:15)
b.  Abraham means "father of multitudes"

           1.     Sarah means princess.        

What:

a.   Abraham received great promises

i.   His family would be a great nation (Genesis |':4)                   . ,

ii.  They would have a covenant relationship with God (Genesis 4:6)

iii. They would receive the land of Canaan for their own (Genesis '4:$)

b.   Abraham was tested in one of greatest tests of faith every requested by God (Genesis 22:1-18).     

c.   Abraham was the first in the lineage of Christ.

i.     From Abraham God created a new nation.   

Where:

a.   Genesis 12: 1-7   Abram called out of Urand went up into Canaan.

b.   Genesis 13:1-12   Abram and Lot part company to find pasture and room for

their flocks.

c.   Genesis 1 8:20-33 Abraham interceded for Sodom (the city in which his

nephew dwelled).

d.   Genesis 21:1-5     The promise begins with Abraham's son — Isaac.

e.   Genesis 22: 1s-1 4   Abraham's faith is tested.

 f.    Hebrews 1 1 :8       Abraham listed among the heroes of faith.

g.   Hebrews 11:17-18 Abraham mentioned again.

h.   James 2:14-24     Abraham used as an example of faith and works together

in order to achieve righteousness.

When:

a.   Most scholars place Abraham approximately 2000 B.C.

i.     Abraham lived to see 175 years (Genesis 25:7) Sarah lived 120 years (Genesis 23:1).

Why:

a.   Abraham was a man of unquestionable faith. Notperfectjjut in the end would always side with God.  - W» ^ l > nc, ,vr5 ^

b.    He trusted God beyond measure.

 

Isaac and Rebekah

Who:

a.   Isaac: (the meaning is "one will laugh" the root word in Isaac is "to laugh") — Interesting considering the fact that both of his parents laughed at the promise of his birth .

1.  Abraham laughed (Genesis 17:17)

2.  Sarah laughed (Genesis 18:12)

3.  Others laughed (Genesis 21 :6)

b.    Rebekah: (the meaning "to tie"). Wife of Isaac and daughter of Bethuel who was Abraham's nephew (Genesis 22:20, 24:15).

What:

a.   Isaac was a child born well past normal time of life (Genesis 17:17, 21:1-3)

b.   Isaac was the promised seed (Genesis 12:2; 17:5,16)

i.    Not only promised seed but also seed of promise. From Isaac the nation

of Israel was born (Matthew 1:1-16).

c.   Isaac is used to test the faith of his father Abraham (Genesis 22:1-13)

Where:

a.   Genesis 17:19-21 Covenant with Isaac ; and his lineage promised

b.  Genesis 21:3        Isaac born as promised.

c.   Genesis 21:4        Abraham accepts covenant by circumcising Isaac.

d.  Genesis 22:1-13   Abraham instructed to offer his son.

e.   Genesis 24           Isaac takes Rebekah as his wife.

f.    Genesis 27:27-29 Isaac blesses Jacob  

g.   Genesis 35:28-29 Isaac passes from this life.

h.  Galatians 4:28      Christian are children of promise even as Isaac was.

i.    Hebrews 11:7       Isaac used to test his fathers faith.

When:

1.   It has been suggested that Abraham lived around 2000 years B.C.

a.   Isaac was born when Abraham was 1 00 years of age (Genesis 21 :5).

b.   Isaac died at 180 years of ages (Genesis 35:28-29)

 

      Why
 

            a.   Isaac is lesson in trusting God. i.    God will fulfill all promises

a)   God does not work within the bounds of nature or man's wisdom.

b.   Isaac is the seed of promise the first of the true lineage from Abraham to Christ.

 

Jacob

1.   Who:

a.   Jacob: (the meaning, "to deceive" (consider Genesis 27:35-36)

b.   Later in life God named Jacob with the name Israel (Genesis 32:28)

2.   What:

a.   Jacob was a twin (Genesis 25:24-28

b.   Jacob through deceit gained the birthright from his brother and the blessing of

his father Isaac (Genesis 25:31-34, 27:27-29)

c.   Jacob had a special dream in which promises were made God to him and his

lineage (Genesis 28:12-22)

d.      Jacob labors fourteen years for the wife whom he loved (Genesis 29:15-30)

e.      Jacob had twelve sons

b..     "I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob..." (Exodus 3:16)

c..   Jacob declared that He would serve the Lord (Genesis 28:18-22)

i. Thus he did all of his days (Hebrews 1:21)

 The Twelve Sons of Jacob (Joseph)

        Who:

 

a.   Joseph means: He (God) will add

b.   Joseph was the eleventh son born to Jacob but was the first child conceived and born by the wife whom Jacob loved most — Rachel.

c.   Joseph can be identified by many different roles through his life.

d.   A son of a nomad

e.   Sold as a slave to the Ishmaelites

f.    A servant of Potiphar

g.   A prisoner

h.   The ruler of Egypt (second only to Pharaoh)

      What:

a.   Although, Joseph was not in the lineage of Christ, it was through Joseph that

            God provided for the building up of Israel to a mighty nation.

1.    Joseph was foretold, through dreams, of things to come.

2.     God provided for Joseph and in turn for all the family of Jacob who are the people of Israel.

      Where

a.   Joseph is born (Genesis 30:24-25)

b.    He was shown two dreams in which "his family" bows down before him (Genesis 37:5-11).

c.   He was delivered to Egypt fist being sold as a slave (Genesis 37:27-28, 36)

d.   He was imprisoned on false charges (Genesis 39:7-20).

i.While in prison he was able to interpret dreams (Genesis 40:7-23)

e.   Joseph was freed and promoted to second in charge of all the land after interpreting Pharaoh's dreams (Genesis 41:14-

f.    These dreams come true (Genesis 41-46)

g.   Joseph calls for his family to move to Egypt and gives them the land of Goshen (Genesis 45:1-15).

h.   Joseph is mention among the heroes of faith (Hebrews 11:22)

      When:

 

a.   Since the Pharaoh under which Joseph rul.ed in not named a certain date cannot be established.

i. Based on ancient records, ledgers and such, many authorities place Joseph in Egypt somewhere between 1780 and 1570 B.C.

b.   Joseph, himself, lived 110 years (Genesis 50:22-26).

 

     Why:

 

a.    In the record of Joseph's life we are able to see how God's providential care can overcome any obstacles.

b.   Also we see a life application of 1 Peter 5:6 "Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time."

1. Joseph would not take the credit for his abilities he recognized God and clear explained that it was God who worked through him. a)   Genesis 40:8 " Do not interpretations belong to God?"

c.  Genesis 15-16 "It is not me; God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace."

d.   Along with the first point (a) we also learn that no matter where you are or what you are faced you can succeed if you put God first.

a.    So often God has provided doors of opportunity that we have refused to see.

b.    Joseph made the best of every situation he was in, being mindful of God.

i.     In turn, the Lord was with Joseph (Genesis 39:2, 3, 21, 23).

 

The Twelve Sons of Jacob (The Other 11).

      Who:

 

a.   Reuben:    Meaning: Behold A Son—the first son of Jacob and Leah

b.   Simeon:    Meaning: Uncertain —the root word, "to hear" Second son of Jacob and Leah.
c.   Levi:          Meaning "to be joined to" (Leah hope that a third son would endear Jacob to her.

d. Judah: Meaning "praised"—the fourth son of Jacob and Leah.
e. Dan:  Meaning "judge" —Jacob fifth son and first with Bilhah
f. Napthali: Meaning "wrestlings of God" or "mighty wrestlings"—Jacobs second son with Bilhah.

g. Gad: Meaning "fortunate"—first son of Jacob with Zilpah h.    Asher:      Meaning "happy"—second son of Jacob and Zilpah

h. Issachar   Meaning "a hired workman"—the fifth son of Jacob and Leah. j.     Zebulun:   Meaning "to bestow"—the sixth son born to Jacob and Leah k.    Benjamin: Meaning "son of the right hand"—the second and last son of Jacob and Rachel.

      What: 

a.   These eleven men were the root of all the children of Israel.

1. They were the turning point from which the promise of a great nation came forth.

     Where:

            a.   Their birth's are recorded in Genesis 29:32-30:24, 35:18)

b.   Once the twelve son where in Egypt and from that time forward in the Old Testament they are spoken of regularly.

1.Once the families are in the land of Canaan the names generally refer to

the tribe of family of... instead of the actual son. c.   There are also mention , on occasion, in the New Testament. Even Paul makes reference the fact that he is of the tribe of Benjamin (Romans 11:1, Philippians 3:5).

     When:

            1. The twelve sons with their father and their families were reunited in Egypt in approximately 1710 B.C.

2. The Exodus was approx. 1280 B.C.

3. The wanderings encompassed 1280 to 1240? B.C.

4. The Israelites conquered the land of Canaan over the time of 1240-1200 B.C.

     Why:

            1.    A study of the children of Israel is a study of...

a. God who established a people.

b. God who established a law

c. God who provides and guides His people.

d. God and His promise keeping.

e. Others who have lived before God.

f.  God who is able to both recompense and reward.
