Remember the rules of
establishing authority:
We can establish our authority for everything we do
by heeding these few rules!
A. It doesn’t matter what an elder, preacher, or any
other members think, it must be scriptural to be acceptable.
1. Remember, we are not
Peter (Matt 16:18)
a. I
cannot loose you from obeying authority
b. I cannot bind you to do
things not authorized
B. It must come from the New Testament as the Old
Testament has passed away.
C. Misusing a verse, taking it out of context, or
ignoring it’s true meaning
1. to either establish
authority or reject authority
2. is blasphemy, punishable
by eternal death
D. Traditions have no bearing in establishing
authority.
E. Authority is derived in various ways:
1. Direct command from Jesus
or the apostles
2. An example that this act
was done in the 1st century church
a.
Customs and events of the time must be considered
i. Was
this command/example limited to this period
ii Is it
a command/example for all ages
3. Generic vs. specific
authority
a. Must
not change what is specifically authorized
b. If not
specific, can use expedients to carry out the command
F. Expediency
1. Is it lawful?
a. Does
it break any other commands or principles?
2. Does it edify?
a. Is it
indeed helpful?
3. Will it spark division or
cause a brother to sin?
4. Does it change a command
by adding to, or taking away?
